Don Lee Arm-Wrestles his Way Back to His Glory Days in “Champion”

Champion Don Lee Saturday, May 26, 2018

“The seed of the film was planted with a simple thought – it would be fun to see actor Don Lee (Ma Don-Seok) arm wrestle,” said Champion director Kim Yong-wan. He did showcase his strength in his previous films like The Outlaws and the worldwide hit Train to Busan but Don Lee won’t be just flexing his muscles in the sports comedy film, he will also work his charms to the audience through the story.

For Mark (Don Lee), arm wrestling is the only thing he has. A Korean adoptee who is able to lift ginormous dumbbells with extreme ease. Thanks to his impressive strength, he competed as an arm wrestler at a national level in the USA, but was kicked out of the league because of an issue. He now works as club bouncer, and a grocery store security, until a friend calls him with an opportunity to get his life back. This also meant going back to his country Korea. Little did he know, he’s not only getting his arm wrestling life back, but he also gets to meet his sister and her family. With their support, he challenges himself to become a champion.

From Train to Busan, The Outlaws, Veteran, Familyhood and the upcoming sequel to Along with the Gods, actor Don Lee (Ma Dong-Seok) always emobodied his characters with creative twists that only he’s able to pull off. In Champion, he has transformed into Mark, an arm wrestler whose forearm reacts faster than his heart and aims to surprise his fans once again.

Mark’s partner-in-crime Jin-ki is played by Kwon Yul, who started in Roaring Currents, The Hunt and The Worst Woman. Mark’s sister Su-jin, who has to juggle between running her business and taking care of her kids, is played by The Hunt and Worst Woman star

HAN Ye-ri.

The film is directed by Kim Yong-wan who began his career in the industry as an assistant director on several notable films such as Harmony (2009) and Quick (2011) which also had a Philippine release.

“Champion” opens in Philippine cinemas on May 30 from Warner Bros Pictures, distributed by Rafaella Films International.

A More Internal Perspective of the World Trade Center Disaster in the 9/11 Movie

9/11 by Rafaella Films International Tuesday, September 05, 2017

“We want to tell a story about five people from different backgrounds, from different places that comes in to tell the story of their survival,” says 9/11 star Olga Fonda. She plays Tina, one of the five who is trapped inside the elevator of the World Trade Center during the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Numerous books, documentaries, and other forms of media have already been created in an attempt to help us come to terms with the events that transpired on 9/11. How could this film be different? To answer that question, the filmmakers decided to tell the story from the inside, a point-of-view not often presented in relation to this tragedy. Much of the imagery of that day was captured externally, such as the sight of the World Trade Center being hit and ultimately, crumbling.

In contrast, 9/11 comprises an interior story, in every sense of the word. The setting being an elevator in the North Tower of the World Trade Center; the characters are five individuals who randomly board and thus witness their fates intertwine in a way none could have anticipated. The film provides an intimate portrait of individuals who are forced by circumstance to attempt to survive America’s greatest tragedy. Although less seen than the stories chronicled from the outside, the interlocking stories inside the elevator are no less real or dramatic. They are stories rooted in the reality of what some people endured that day.

Director and co-writer Martin Guigui, came by the story through actor-producer Deacon Drawdy, who had optioned the stage play, Elevator. Initially, Guigui had some doubts and questioned why make this into a film now? Ultimately though, “[I] couldn’t get the story out of my head. I saw it as an opportunity to explore not just the issues around this horrific event, but to plunge into the humanity that arises out of the circumstance,” Guigui recalls.

“It’s a story about heroes, it’s a story about really honouring those that sacrificed everything and those that didn’t make it, and those that did,” says Charlie Sheen who plays Jeffrey Cage.

“This is one that really focuses on what happened, a more internal scope,” he continues.

Clearly, “9/11” movie is a more internal perspective of what happened during the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center. And we get to experience what was it like stuck in that elevator. Every minute matters and we must not lose hope to have the will to survive.

The film stars Charlie Sheen, Whoopi Goldberg, Luis Guzman, Gina Gershon, Woody Harris and Olga Fonda. Co-written and directed by Martin Guigui.

“9/11” movie opens in Philippine cinemas September 13, distributed by Rafaella Films International.

In This Corner of the World: Film Review

Entertainment Monday, July 03, 2017

I may not have been during World War II but after watching "In this Corner of the World", I got a glimpse and perspective of what goes on in the lives of those who are affected specifically in Hiroshima, Japan during that time, thanks to anime writer-director Sunao Katabuchi.

Adapted from Fumiyo Kono’s manga, at first, the story was more concerned with household chores and family matters than it is with soldiers on the battlefield and the war. Winner of multiple prizes, including Best Animation Film at the Japanese Academy Awards, In this Corner of the World grossed nearly $20 million when it was released in late 2016. Now showing in the Philippines.

The story started in 1933, with young artist Suzu living with her parents and little sister, Sumi in a seaside cottage outside Hiroshima, the story follows her all the way to early August 1945, when the atomic bomb would devastate much of her family, friends and hometown.

At that point, Suzu is already in her late teens and has been living for over a year in the naval port city of Kure — about an hour’s train ride from Hiroshima at the time — where she's staying at the house of husband Shusaku who asked for her hand in marriage even though the two hardly knew each other.

Following Suzu’s life as a married woman from month to month, Katabuchi initially focuses on the daily grind of a housewife living in rural Japan, with much time devoted to cooking, fetching water, sewing kimonos and trying to be a presentable homemaker — which is especially difficult for the artistic minded Suzu, who often has her head in the clouds while doing her artistic sketches. Her sister-in-law, Keiko doesn’t necessarily make things easier, although Suzu soon becomes the favorite of Keiko’s little daughter, Harumi, who accompanies her on walks through town or through the surrounding fields.

If the first part of the film draws moments of drama, Suzu warms up to the kindhearted Shusaku and seems to accept her position in his home and at the same time grew fond of him as well — once the war kicks in Suzu’s peaceful existence becomes severely threatened. Food grows scarce, the men of the house are either wounded or away working for the Imperial Japanese Army and, when the Americans launch a vicious bombing campaign on Kure (whose large port housed Japan's major battleships), this is where Suzu experienced major heartbreak with what happened in their life because of a tragedy that hit them.

In this Corner of the World is moving, it will touch your heart and made you realize how hard it is to live during those times. The writer is clearly concerned with showing how the conflict affects Suzu and women like her, this showcases how women during those times strives to be tough for their families while the men were busy working or fighting for the country. I love how the movie showcased the realistic happenings during the wartime at Kuru and Hiroshima, plus the colorful costumes and props including the dishes Suzu serves up to her in-laws when after craving for how many days without good food, it makes you hungry while watching it. This movie is truly an eye-opener and we should really salute those who strive to surpass the past because of the challenges they experienced those times.

Love, Courage and Family in Uplifting Animated Film In This Corner of the World

Entertainment Wednesday, June 21, 2017

“There have been previous anime films set around the devastation in Hiroshima, but none with the ultimately uplifting and positive message of In This Corner of the World, so we can’t wait to bring this beautiful film to Annecy,” Animatsu Entertainment Chief Operating Officer Jerome Mazandarani said. “We believe the rest of the world will share our enthusiasm for this story.”

In This Corner of the World tells the story of the adolescent Suzu, who in 1944 moves to the small town of Kure in Hiroshima to live with her husband’s family. Suzu’s life is thrown into chaos when her town is bombed during World War II. Her perseverance and courage, however, underpin this heart-warming and inspirational tale of the everyday challenges faced by the Japanese in the midst of a violent, war-torn country.

“In This Corner of the World is not a typical war movie: the town is so beautifully recreated and the characters are so wonderfully achieved that the focus is on the art that is imbued in daily life itself,” GENCO President Taro Maki said. “While it is of course heart-breaking to behold the before and after scenes, the willpower that normal people muster in the name of love and caring is what really stands out.”

“War is the opposite of daily life, yet daily life must go on even through war. And perfectly normal people can achieve this miraculous feat in the most extreme circumstances one can imagine,” the film’s director SunaoKatabuchi notes. “That’s what this film explores. I believe those very specific details in this film help viewers perceive the infinite emotions experienced by these absolutely normal people.”

The film already garnered awards including Animation of the Year at the 40th Japan Academy Prize, Best Music Score for Kotoringo and OfujiNoburo Award at the Mainichi Film Concours. Its latest achievement is getting the Jury Award at the 41st Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France.

While the Japanese and foreign audiences loved In This Corner of the World, it currently stands at a perfect score at the American review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes with 6 reviews. The film is set to open in UK Theaters June 28 and in US Theaters on August 11.

“In This Corner of the World” opens in Philippine cinemas June 28 from Rafaella Films International.

The Case for Christ Now Showing in Time for Lent

Entertainment Saturday, April 08, 2017

Lee Strobel’s award-winning bestselling book based on a true story about a hard-driving investigative journalist and avowed aethieist (Strobel, played by Mike Vogel) who applies his well-honed journalistic and legal skills to disprove the newfound Christian faith of his wife… with unexpected, life-altering results.

Strobel was exactly where he expected to be at work: on top. His award-winning investigative reporting recently earned him a promotion to legal editor at the Chicago Tribune. But things weren’t going nearly as well at home where his wife Leslie’s newfound faith in Christ went against everything Lee believed—or didn’t believe—as an avowed atheist.

Utilizing his journalistic and legal training, Lee begins a quest to debunk the claims of Christianity in order to save his crumbling marriage. Chasing down the biggest story of his career, Lee comes face-to-face with unexpected results that could change everything he knows to be true.

An ideal Easter-season movie for anyone who has pondered the existence of God and what role He could play in their lives from Pure Flix Entertainment, the people behind the 2014 box-office hit God's Not Dead.

Starring Mike Vogel (Cloverfield, The Help), Ericka Christensen (Flightplan Parenthood TV Series), Faye Dunaway (Chinatown), and Robert Forster (Jackie Brown, Olympus Has Fallen) and directed by Jon Gunn.

Thankfully, I was able to watch the block screening of The Case for Christ and I will surely watch this again with my family especially my Mom. Ever since I was a kid, come Holy Week, we would watch different movies about Christ, the apostles and Mother Marry. I think I've watched the 10 Commandments 50 times already over the years and even though I already memorized some of the scenes, I still look forward into watching it over and over again. Why? It's simple. Visually, it reminds me how Christianity started and educates me how I should accept Christ as a whole just like how he loves all of us unconditionally.

The Case for Christ gave me goosebumps and a bigger picture how Christ sacrificed himself for his unconditional love to all of us in order to save the humanity. The Bible says it all, everything that we need to know about him. If we reflect on our lives, Christ is always present, this is how the movie tells us that if we need his guidance and support, we should just have faith in him and let him do it for us.

The actors in this movie did a wonderful job on their roles too.

"The Case for Christ" now showing in cinemas nationwide!
