Hero or villain? Lover or fighter? Sinner or saint?

A quick search of #MariaMovie online will lead to poster images of a fierce-looking Cristine Reyes with those words. Coinciding International Women's Day, let's celebrate women empowerment by showcasing women as fearless and bold like Crisitine Reyes in her newest action film MARIA.

A film by Pedring A. Lopez (Direk Pedring), “Maria” follows the story of a former cartel assassin named Lily who fakes her own death after an unfulfilled mission that earns the wrath of her organization. She flees to a distant province where she completely transforms her life. Changing her name to Maria, she meets Bert, a respectable businessman who becomes her husband. They have a daughter named Mina.

Maria’s peaceful life is cut short when the cartel learns of her whereabouts. Kaleb, the man whose orders she didn’t follow in the past, tracks her down right inside her home. Failing to protect her family, she returns to a life of violence with revenge on her mind.

Cristine Reyes shows how badass she can get as she takes on the title role. She underwent rigorous training and was obviously hurt while shooting a major fight scene, yet the actress remained unperturbed as seen in her Instagram story showing the numerous bruises on her arms and legs.

The internationally acclaimed Direk Pedring (Best Director at the Los Angeles Philippine Film Festival and Festival Internacional de Cine Fantastico de Torremolinos for “Nilalang”) tweeted that Cristine “handles the fights with almost 90% of all her stunts without doubles”, expressing his “respect for her dedication to her craft.”

For the past 15 years, Reyes has done a lot of comedy and drama films and a few horror movies. “Maria” is her big screen comeback after “Abay Babes”. In an interview found on Film Combat Syndicate.com, the actress says, “It’s definitely the most challenging thing I’ve done in my career. I’m super proud of it…”

She also narrates how Viva gave her this project. “They felt strongly about the material and thought I’d be a good fit for the role. I guess they figured it would speak to me on many levels – as an actress, as a mother in real life, and as a martial arts enthusiast. And they were correct. I loved the script when I read it.”

Being a fan of the ‘80s action, Direk Pedring says that he “wanted to bring it back, (but) put it in a modern setting”, and to “utilize Filipino martial arts” which is seen in Hollywood movies like the “Bourne” franchise. Reyes exalts the director for his vision, saying, “I like his style. He has a vision and he really wants that vision to really happen…You feel that he loves his project.”

”It’s about time to show the world that Filipino filmmakers can also do excellent action films,” says Reyes. “Even more exciting that these movies are being fronted by strong female characters. The world needs to know that Filipinas also kick butt!”

Prior to this, VIVA Films already produced an intense and superbly executed action film centering on a female lead. “BuyBust”, starring Anne Curtis as a PDEA agent, became the talk of the town when it was shown in cinemas last August 2018. The fight choreographer/fight director for this film was Sonny Sison, the same one for “Maria”. He also worked with Direk Pedring in “Nilalang”.

Talking about Reyes, Sison says, “From the perspective of a fight choreographer, it is nice to see your lead actress not just commit in doing the moves but also infuses the emotional content. That’s really important where action is concerned…you are really able to emote the feeling of what’s going on in the fight at the same time.”

All her co-actors agree that they are blown away by Reyes’ performance. The actress concludes, “It’s one heck of an action film but also a terrific drama movie about a mother’s love for her child. It’s a movie for everyone.”

“Maria” also stars Ivan Padilla, KC Montero, Guji Lorenzana, Jennifer Lee, Andrea del Rosario, Cindy Miranda, Freddie Webb and Ronnie Lazaro.

ABAY BABES, VIVA Films latest offering this September, is a feast for the eyes as it brings together Cristine Reyes, Kylie Verzosa, Nathalie Hart, Meg Imperial, and Roxanne Barcelo, who are all oozing with sexiness and pizzazz.

Along with the visual treat is a story that has a right mix of fun and intrigue to captivate all audiences.

Many years after high school, Emerald, Ruby, Perla, and Goldie (considered the Bicol “It Girls” of their batch) are reunited for the latter’s upcoming wedding. Joining them is Jade, Goldie’s friend from America. Everyone is excited about this get-together, but somehow, Goldie’s friends are finding it hard to believe that she is going to be the first to fulfill their dream of getting married, considering that she is the least attractive among them.

Emerald, Ruby and Perla secretly joke that Goldie might just be making this all up. And when they can’t see any videos or pictures of the groom, Zack, the three start to take their joke seriously. As if their skepticism is not enough, their past issues against one another are also reopened. At a time when friendship and love are supposed to be celebrated, will doubt and rivalry get the better of them?

Playing the role of Emerald is Nathalie Hart who entered showbiz in 2008 through ABS-CBN’s Star Magic. In May 2018, she was the cover of the final print issue of FHM. Emerald has the alias “Bicol Express” because, according to her, she is the hottest among her friends. She works as a commercial model.

Ruby, the class topnotcher back in high school and is now a doctor, is played by Cristine Reyes. She is called “Pili Nuts” because, ultimately, guys would choose her beauty over all others. (Pili is the Tagalog for choose.) Cristine shared in an interview that she enjoyed jamming with the girls between takes. Her last film was a family drama, making this comedy film really fun to do.

Perla, who is called “Mt. Mayon” because of its perfect shape, just like her figure, is played by Miss International 2016 Kylie Verzosa. She has appeared in the movies “Ang Panday” and “Kasal”, but this is her first leading role. “I have this desire to be really good at something,” Kylie once said in an interview. “I want to be good at acting, not being an artista.”

Goldie, the class clown in the movie, is played by Roxanne Barcelo who is also the funniest one in the cast. Goldie is given the moniker, “Abaca” (fiber, in English), because she is the toughest of them all. In real life, Roxanne has both the toughness and the talents (like singing and hosting) that are necessary to last in the world of show business.

Jade, the videographer who will document the girls’ road trip to the wedding venue, is played by Meg Imperial. A recent IG post of Meg is captioned “Once you become fearless, life becomes limitless.” Indeed, Meg’s career is flourishing because she is open to doing different roles.

Direk Don Cuaresma described each of the cast on how they are in the set and as an actress, all of them according to Direk Don have different personalities and among all of them, he was surprised with Cristine Reyes because she is very professional, he was expecting a bratty-dive like actress with Cristine but it was the opposite, she was game on all the time as well as Nathalie Hart that he never knew was pregnant while they're shooting, still she did all the scenes without any qualms.

All of them have different characters on the film and they tackle it their own way without any issue with their co-stars. They also developed friendship while filming the movie where they became closer like Nathalie who always asks for advice regarding motherhood and having a family from Cristine Reyes.

Cristine Reyes and Derek Ramsay has worked before in a movie which is also a blockbuster hit "A Secret Affair" with co-star Anne Curtis-Smith and it seems like they have this chemistry that people are really looking forward to watch. Now, they are back in the big screen produced by Viva Films and MVP Pictures. It is directed by Andoy Ranay with co-stars who are equally talented Heart Evangelista and John Estrada.

Honestly speaking, I have been a big fan of Viva Films ever since, even before they have dominated the movie scene with movies that will touch your heart and will make you feel like the movie that you are watching is your story. Trophy Wife is a movie that I am sure many people can relate to and thanks to Direk Andoy Ranay and to the writers of this movie, they created a movie that is for me 4 out of 5 stars.

There is no denying how amazing John, Cristine, Derek and Heart portrayed their respective roles.

You can very well see how Cristine Reyes matured in this role and how versatile she has become over the years. Some people might not agree with me which is fine because this is my opinion but I have watched her movies in the past and compared to her acting in this movie, there is depth and I can feel the chill in her character.

The cinematography and the glossiness of the movie is superb! You will totally love how Direk Andoy shot most of the scenes in this movie, I don't know much about the technical stuff when it comes to directing but I know how to appreciate a cinematography and glossiness of a movie since I am a movie buff. Plus, I also love the superb fashion statement of the movie, they look all fashionable not to the extent of overdoing it, Heart looks really beautiful in this movie even Cristine who still looks sexier than ever.

The movie started when Samuel (John Estrada) and Chino (Derek Ramsay) died. Clearly they were from a very rich and prominent family. While Sam is a dutiful son who has helped the family business, Chino is a carefree playboy, who feels it’s too early to take life seriously, even on the occasion of his father’s death.

Chino meets Lani (Cristine Reyes) on one of his nights out, and despite of the fact that she is just a "plain Jane", a relationship develops between them. When a bar fight with a local mayor’s son forces Chino to go in the US, a pregnant Lani loses her baby when she goes to Chino’s house in the hope of getting an explanation for his disappearance. To exact some measure of revenge, Lani reinvents herself and catches the eye of Sam, while a lonely Chino finds his much-missed Filipino food an opportunity to meet Gwen (Heart Evangelista) in the US.

Spoiler alert! It is from this point that plot twists and dark motives surfaces in and out of the picture which heightens our suspense to the movie , there's a lot to this movie that you should find out and the twists of the movie will make you glued to the screen till the end. You will also say the same sentiment like I did when the movie ends, "Makes sense".

What I also love about the movie is the heated and remarkable arguments that I wanted to say "bravo" to the writer of this film, I am also imagining if maybe Direk Andoy also wrote those lines.

Gwen: Hihinaan ko yung heater baka masyadong mainit.

Lani: Hindi heater ang nararamdaman mo kundi kumukulong dugo ko sa’yo.

Chino: Pasensya ka na, Lani, ‘pag nalawayan na, ayoko na.

Lani: Hindi ba ‘pag nalawayan na hindi na pinamimigay? Ikaw ang nauna, mas may karapatan ka.

and in this cene where Heart saw them in the sauna:

Lani: Tapos na ko, ikaw naman.

Some of the cast are Jackie Lou Blanco, G Toengi, John James Uy, Kian Kazemi, Jovic Monsod, Clint Bondad, and Jaime Fabregas.

The ending of the movie is just as good. It has that redeeming factor that will make you forgive who was the bad person or will make you understand that it is better that way. This movie will surely has this blockbuster potential and I congratulate Viva Films for making quality films in this generation.

TFC’s largest event offers 15 stars in historic West and East Coast shows

The promise of the campaign is clear: “Pinakamalaki, Pinaka-sulit, at Super-sayang Kapamilya Event!” Literally, ABS-CBN The Filipino Channel's (TFC) biggest annual event, One Kapamilya Go 2013, boldly guarantees to be the biggest, best value for money and super fun event for the whole family.

Scheduled for October 18 at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey and California’s Great America in Santa Clara on October 20, the promise is not without basis: TFC pulled out all the stops in making sure that the cast of 15 stars in the first ever coast-to-coast One Kapamilya Go can deliver world-class entertainment and charm thousands with their winning “aw-shucks” appeal.

For those in the San Francisco Bay Area and the New York Tri-state area who missed the Be Careful With My Heart U.S. Tour last May, they now have the chance to see their dream cast of Richard “Sir Chief” Yap, Jodi “Yaya Maya” Sta. Maria, Tart “Yaya Doris” Carlos and Viveika “Yaya Sabel” Ravanes.

For thousands of fans who followed the just concluded, The Voice of the Philippines, they get to see and hear live coaches Lea Salonga and Bamboo with Salonga’s mentee, champion Mitoy Yonting, runner-up Klarisse De Guzman and finalists Janice Javier and Myk Perez

Then there are the “Teleserye Babes and Hunks” Gerald Anderson, Maja Salvador, Cristine Reyes and Sam Milby, joined by Pop Rock Princess Yeng Constantino – all mainstays of the number one variety show in the Philippines, ASAP 18.

Social media exploded with comments of “amazing line-up”, “great talent, great songs”, and “forget everything except your camera, phone and charger!” Indeed, excitement is reaching fever pitch.

Coast-to-Coast One Kapamilya Go: Years in the Making

The road this year to One Kapamilya Go actually began in 2011 when TFC rose to the challenge of accommodating as many fans as possible to Gibson Amphitheatre inside Universal Studios Hollywood where the full-day family entertainment and community event was held that year.

“Since 2008, One Kapamilya Go has been comprised of whole day activities that include auditions, parlor games, free movie screenings, meet and greet with the stars, offerings of Filipino food, attractions of the venue with theme park rides and then everything climaxes into a main show – a singular star-studded concert,” narrated Ricky Resurreccion, ABS-CBN North America head of Ad Sales, Trade Marketing & Events.

“But in 2011, we did back-to-back shows at Gibson Amphitheatre for the first time where we had capacity crowds,” he recalled. “Seeing that back-to-back was possible in one day, our Managing Director Chinky De Jesus threw us a challenge: why not coast-to-coast next time?”

The challenge fit right into the mission of ABS-CBN TFC to be in the service of the Filipino wherever he or she may be. One Kapamilya Go has always been held in California. There was a growing clamor to bring the event to the East Coast. The TFC Events team did a dry run of sorts via the launch of its concert brand, “TFC Presents”, bringing the red-hot cast of the popular teleserye, “Be Careful With My Heart” for concerts in Los Angeles, California on May 10 and in Kissimmee, Florida on May 12. After drawing thousands to both events, sights were set for West and East Coast legs of One Kapamilya Go 2013.

Last June at the Philippine Independence Day celebration in Manhattan, New York, TFC superstar Gary Valenciano revealed that One Kapamilya Go is coming to the East Coast in October. In August at the annual Pistahan Parade & Festival at the Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco, top TFC young stars Xian Lim, Maja Salvador and KZ Tandingan announced that One Kapamilya Go is also going to happen in the Bay Area.

My Brother's Romance hits the P50M mark

If long lines at movie theaters and rave reviews from critics and fans alike are any indication, Skylight Films couldn't have asked for a better or more successful initial foray into comedy than the Zanjoe Marudo-led Bromance: My Brother's Romance.

Directed by Wenn V, Deramas, the movie zoomed to the top of the box office in its first week and continues to make millions with each passing day. In fact, Bromance: My Brother's Romancehas earned a staggering fifty million pesos to date and counting. This marks the movie as the highest growing film of Skylight Films.

One of the reasons why people continue to flock to movie theaters for Bromance: My Brother's Romance is the stellar performance of its male lead. Moviegoers wanted to see if the early buzz surrounding Zanjoe's portrayal of identical twins Brando and Brandy in this movie was true— and they weren't disappointed at all. Neither was the Cinema Evaluation Board, which showered praise upon the movie and Zanjoe himself in its review.

"The casting is excellent. Zanjoe Marudo is a revelation, as he essayed both his roles with great versatility.Sromance; My Brother's Romance is a good vehicle for him to display his range. This was his best movie—his performance was commendable and effortless—and it's the perfect launching movie for him," writes the CEB.

Zanjoe acknowledges that Direk Wenn's magic touch helped a lot. When they were shooting the movie, Direk Wenn gave Zanjoe very specific advice on how best to bring Brando to life. "Sabi niya wag kong isipin na hading si Brandy, isipin ko daw na si Brandy ay babae, so d'un ko mas nilaro yung utak ko, na babae siya, Kambal nga kami, pero 'babae ako, lalaki ka, kaya lang, ang itsura ko, laiaki, kaya nagmumukhang bading si Brandy, Inimagine ko na pusong babae talaga si Brandy napakalambot at sensitive talaga. Mukhang nakita naman ng mga nanood yung pagkakaiba ng dalawa."

Direk Wenn brought the same flavor to Bromance: My Brother's Romance that he did to the recent movies he directed for Star Cinema—Praybeyt Benjamin, Sisterakas and This Guy's In Love With You, Mare—all of which broke records at the box office too.

On Direk Wenn's skillful handling of the movie, the Cinema Evaluation Board writes, "It is very entertaining and not at all strained in the flow of the comedic materials. This film is a marked improvement compared to Wenn Deramas' past works in this genre. Direk Wenn has scored a comedic masterpiece where his hilarious gags are very effective. He gives the film an engaging treatment where there is hardly a dull moment in it. In short, the direction is very good because Direk Wenn knows his subject matter very well."

The Cinema Evaluation Board also praised the script, which was co-written by Direk Wenn and writers Ayz De Guzman and Danno Kristopher C. Mariquit. In its review, the CEB says of the script, "Although the film is unabashedly done in slapstick fashion, the script is still very amusing and witty. The screenplay is well-written and is complemented by the right comedic timing and enthusiastic portrayals by the main and supporting cast. The script is ridiculously funny yet heartwarming with crisp punchlines delivered at just the right time. There is a method to this madness and this time it works. The story makes no qualms that it is pure slapstick."

Those who attended the special celebrity screening of Bromance: My Brothers Romance seconded the CEB comments. Enchong Dee couldn't get enough of the punchlines. "Ang darning bagong mga jokes," he enthused. "Yung difference pati nina Brando at Brandy, kitang-kita. tapos yung Brando na nagpapaka-Brandy ang gating."

"Sobra po siyang nakakatawa," Andi Eigenmann said. "Talagang relatable siya at ang darning bago at the same time, kaya masarap siyang panoorin."

But don't let those glowing reviews make up your mind for you—Bromance: My Brother's Romance is best experienced in person, so go line up at a cinema near you while it's still in theaters!
