Driving Hope Forward: Caritas Manila Extends Aid to Jeepney and Tricycle Drivers Amid Fuel Crisis
Tuesday, April 21, 2026Amid the continuing oil price hikes and transportation challenges in the Philippines, Caritas Manila has once again stepped forward to assist one of the country’s most vulnerable sectors—public utility drivers.
Reverend Father Antonio Cecilio "Anton" T. Pascual, the Executive Director of Caritas Manila opening remarks.
At its Pandacan headquarters in Manila, the organization distributed gift certificates to jeepney and tricycle drivers who have been severely affected by rising fuel costs and dwindling daily earnings. The initiative, spearheaded by Caritas Manila Executive Director Rev. Fr. Anton Pascual, is part of the group’s broader humanitarian response to the ongoing economic strain.
A Lifeline for Drivers
Around 176 jeepney and tricycle drivers from the Pandacan area received gift certificates worth ₱2,000 each—an amount intended to help cover basic necessities such as food and essential goods. These drivers, many of whom rely on daily boundary systems and fluctuating passenger demand, have been among the hardest hit by the surge in fuel prices and inflation.
The assistance aims to ease the burden on drivers who are struggling to bring home enough income for their families. With transportation costs rising and commuter volumes still inconsistent, many drivers have found it increasingly difficult to sustain their livelihoods.
Responding to a Growing Crisis
Joseph Baluyot, President of the Pandacan Drivers Association shared how drivers struggle to make ends meet everyday now that oil price marks its highest peak in history.
The initiative reflects Caritas Manila’s continuing commitment to social action, particularly during times of crisis. As the social service and development ministry of the Archdiocese of Manila, the organization has long implemented programs focused on poverty alleviation, disaster response, and community support.
Recent outreach efforts have specifically targeted public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers and other marginalized sectors affected by economic pressures, including the oil crisis. By providing gift certificates instead of cash, Caritas Manila ensures that the aid is directed toward essential needs, helping families cope with the rising cost of living.
Leadership Rooted in Service
Under the leadership of Fr. Anton Pascual, Caritas Manila has continued to mobilize resources and partnerships to extend aid where it is most needed. Known for championing programs like “Oplan Damayan,” the organization has consistently responded to both large-scale disasters and everyday hardships faced by Filipino communities.
During the distribution, Fr. Pascual emphasized the importance of solidarity, especially in times of economic uncertainty. The initiative not only provided material assistance but also served as a reminder that sectors like jeepney and tricycle drivers are not forgotten amid the country’s ongoing challenges.
Continuing the Mission
As fuel prices remain volatile and the transportation sector continues to navigate post-pandemic realities, efforts like these highlight the role of faith-based organizations in bridging gaps where support is urgently needed.
For the drivers in Pandacan, the gift certificates represent more than just financial relief—they symbolize hope, compassion, and a community that stands with them in difficult times.
