A day rarely stays exactly as planned. A morning might begin with training before work, continue through meetings and errands, and end with dinner with friends. Somewhere in between, traffic changes the schedule, a meeting runs longer than expected, or the weather suddenly turns. What begins as one kind of day often becomes something else entirely.
For Eelos founder Gian Yap, this reflects what it means to live a life in motion. It is less about constantly being busy and more about how different parts of people’s lives increasingly exist within the same day. Work, fitness, travel, relationships, interests, and personal pursuits no longer sit neatly in separate schedules. They overlap.
Yap sees this in his own routine. On any given day, he might move between running Eelos, hybrid training, pickleball, meetings, and dinner. His experience reflects a broader shift in how people structure their days, with flexible and hybrid work arrangements making the boundaries between professional and personal time increasingly fluid.
“People aren’t only one thing throughout the day,” Yap says. “You can be building a career or a business, training for something, playing a sport, traveling, and still making time for the people and experiences that matter to you. Those aren’t separate versions of your life anymore. They all become part of the same life.”
As routines become more fluid, Yap believes the things people own should follow the same principle. Rather than having something different for every possible occasion, he sees greater value in products that adapt across different parts of the day, remain useful as plans change, and stay relevant beyond a single purpose or trend.
That thinking eventually shaped his approach to Eelos. The idea was never simply to create another bag. It was to design around the reality that life moves, and the things people carry should make that movement easier rather than add friction to it.
“A life in motion isn’t about always being on the move,” Yap says. “It’s about having the freedom to move between the different parts of your life as they unfold.”
Designing for Real Life
Long before Eelos existed, Yap was already living the kind of life that would eventually shape the brand. During his years in the corporate world, his days rarely began and ended at the office. Work meant moving between meetings, grabbing dinner with friends, and fitting in a workout or class afterward. The things he needed in the morning weren’t always the same things he needed later in the day.
“Working in corporate made me realize how much can happen within a single day,” Yap says. “You leave home with a plan from morning until night, and sometimes the day doesn’t follow it at all. You might have a sudden meeting, training, dinner, errands, or something completely unexpected in between. I started thinking about how the things we use should be able to move with that kind of life.”
Living in the Philippines added another layer to that reality. Weather changes without warning. Traffic turns a short trip into a much longer one. A straightforward day in the morning can look completely different by the afternoon. For people who spend much of the day away from home, that often means preparing for work, weather, exercise, errands, and unexpected changes before they even step out the door.
Yap knew the burden firsthand. He knew what it was like to carry everything needed for an entire day, move from one commitment to another, and get caught in sudden rain while trying to keep work essentials protected. Rather than viewing these as isolated inconveniences, he saw them as part of something bigger: life had become more fluid, while many everyday products were still designed around fixed occasions and predictable routines.
That realization eventually influenced the way he approached Eelos. Instead of starting with the question, “How do we make another bag?” Yap began with a different one: “How do you create products that genuinely help people keep moving, even when life doesn’t go according to plan?”
That question became the foundation of Eelos. Inspired by the Filipino word kilos, the brand was built around the philosophy of intentional movement, where every product is designed to enable movement rather than simply become another accessory. It reflects the belief that movement is more than getting from one place to another. It is an expression of how people choose to live.
Designing with Intention
That philosophy now shapes how Yap approaches product development at Eelos. Rather than starting with what else can be added to a product, he begins by looking at how people move through their lives. For him, thoughtful design is less about having more features and more about understanding which details genuinely make everyday movement easier.
“Every feature has to earn its place,” Yap says. “I always come back to the same question: does this make it easier for someone to move through their day?”
That approach takes on added relevance in the Philippines, where even a well-planned day can change quickly. The weather shifts. Traffic affects schedules. Work extends into dinner. Training happens before or after meetings. A weekend away might begin straight from the office. A product designed for only one of those moments risks becoming another thing a person has to manage.
Eelos products are designed around that fluidity. The Duffel, for example, was created to work across different parts of the day rather than for one specific occasion. “Motion is a choice,” Yap says. “The way we move through life reflects our priorities, our values, and the kind of life we want to create. I want every product we make to quietly support that journey.”
For Yap, quality means designing with intention instead of excess. It means creating products people continue to trust long after trends have faded and understanding that good design should earn its place in someone’s life through repeated use.
A New Chapter for Local Brands
As more Filipino brands gain recognition, Yap believes the country’s opportunity lies in creating products informed by local realities and building from a perspective Filipinos understand firsthand.
“We understand how Filipinos live because we live it ourselves,” Yap says. “We know what it’s like to adapt, to work through unpredictable weather, and to make the most of every day. Those experiences give us something unique to contribute.”
For Yap, being local doesn’t mean thinking small. It means starting from a distinctly Filipino perspective while building products and brands with ambitions that extend beyond the country.
“I think there’s an opportunity for more Filipino brands to build with the same confidence as any global brand,” Yap says. “We don’t have to look elsewhere for what a great brand should be. We can start with what we know, build something meaningful here, and eventually bring that point of view to a much bigger audience.”
Eelos is still at the beginning of that journey, but its ambition reflects the same philosophy that started it: build around how people actually live, create with intention, and keep moving as life evolves.
For Yap, a life in motion isn’t defined by how busy someone is or how many places they go. It is about having the freedom to move between work, health, relationships, interests, travel, and everything else that makes up a life without having to choose only one version of yourself.
