Ruby Ruiz is drawing early Best Actress buzz for her emotionally resonant performance in Status: Rejected, one of the nine full-length entries to the 22nd Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival. Behind the camera is Vahn Leinard C. Pascual, the youngest director in this year's full-length competition, making his feature debut with a heartfelt story that gives voice to an older generation whose dreams and emotions are often left unseen.
The film also stars Beverly Salviejo, Yani Villarosa, and Alessandra de Ross.

Virginia “Biring” Divinagracia, a 69-year-old widow, has spent her life caring for her daughter and granddaughter in a home that no longer feels like hers. After her fourth U.S. visa rejection, her dream of reuniting with her son feels impossible. An old friend opens the door to the digital world where Biring rediscovers connection and visibility. There, she meets Steve, a charming American stranger, who makes her feel wanted for the first time in decades. As her heart opens, so does her hope that this might finally be her ticket to love and to the America she’s always dreamed of. But as her world begins to revolve around a screen, the line between dream and delusion blurs, testing how far she’ll go for love and belonging.

Since the release of its teaser trailer following the Cinemalaya media conference, audiences online have praised Ruiz's heartfelt portrayal, with many already pointing to another awards-worthy performance.
Even Alessandra de Rossi's appearance in the teaser has generated excitement, given her commanding screen presence hinting at another layered performance from the acclaimed actress.
Together with Beverly Salviejo and Yani Villarosa, the ensemble brings to life a story that explores dreams, family, friendship, sacrifice, and the hope that it is never too late to find happiness.
A young filmmaker tells the story of an older generation
While Status: Rejected centers on a grandmother, its story comes from the youngest voice among this year's Cinemalaya full-length finalists.
The award-winning queer filmmaker previously earned recognition for acclaimed shorts including Sina Alexa, Xander at ang Universe and Alingasngas ng mga Kuliglig, the latter eventually finding a home on the Criterion Channel. Named by CNN Philippines Life as one of the country's emerging filmmakers to watch and a recipient of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts' Ani ng Dangal Award, Pascual now makes his feature directorial debut with a story inspired by the quiet emotional lives of Filipino grandmothers.
Director's Statement
In his director's statement, Pascual describes Status: Rejected as a deeply personal tribute to his own grandmother and to countless elderly Filipinos whose dreams and longing often go unnoticed.
"Status: Rejected is a love letter to my grandmother and to many Filipino grandmothers whose lives are shaped by quiet longing. They long for their children who left home in search of a better life, for conversations that once filled their days, and for dreams they were forced to set aside. As the years pass, their world slowly becomes smaller—not because they are unloved, but because life moves quickly and they are left behind.
For me, rejection is not always loud or obvious; it lives in the conversations that no longer happen, in the dreams we quietly give up, in the feeling of no longer being truly seen. I have often wondered how many of our grandmothers carry this kind of rejection in silence—from the world, from the people they love, or from the expectations they have placed on themselves. This film began with a question that has stayed with me for years: Do our grandmothers still have space to be seen, to be heard, and to be loved for who they are beyond the roles they once carried?
Through Biring, I wanted to give form to the emotional lives they continue to hold in silence. Beneath her humor, stubbornness, and hope is a woman searching for dignity, belonging, and connection. My grandmother taught me that the deepest pain is not rejection or failure but the quiet ache of becoming invisible. This film is for her."
More than a rejected visa
Although the title refers to Biring's repeated visa denials, Status: Rejected reveals that the deepest rejection she experiences isn't from an embassy—but from the loneliness, invisibility, and emotional distance that come with growing older.
The film explores timeless questions that resonate across generations: What dream have you never stopped chasing? How far would you go for love? What sacrifices would you make for family? And is there really an age limit to finding happiness?
Blending drama, family, and comedy, Status: Rejected ultimately reminds audiences that before becoming mothers and grandmothers, women first had dreams of their own—and that no one is ever too old to dream, to love, or to begin again.
The film is written by Vahn Leinard C. Pascual; Jaymar Santos Castro, FSG; and Ivan Villacorta Gentolizo, FSG. It is directed by Pascual and stars Ruby Ruiz, Beverly Salviejo, Yani Villarosa, and Alessandra De Rossi.
The film's creative team also includes Che Tagyamon (editor), Martika Ramirez Escobar (cinematographer), Marielle Hizon (production designer), Hans Piozon (original musical score), and Nikolai Lantano (sound designer).
Executive producers are Paul Soriano, Mark Victor, and Omar Sortijas, while Omar Sortijas, Micah Tadena, and Fea Fortuna serve as producers.

Co-organized by the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and the Cinemalaya Foundation, Inc., the festival runs from August 6 to 18 at Red Carpet Cinemas in Shangri-La Plaza, Gateway Cineplex, and select Ayala Malls Cinemas.
Regular tickets are priced at ₱350, while students may avail of ₱250 tickets. Senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PWDs), national coaches, and national athletes are also entitled to a 20 percent discount.
Tickets are available through participating cinemas' online ticketing platforms and onsite ticket counters.
