SAFE FROM TOXIC LEAD: Stakeholders from different sectors celebrate the Lead Safe Paint® (LSP®) certification awarded by SCS Global Services to Triton and other paints produced by Roosevelt Chemical Inc. —Triton Paints Philippines, which confirms product compliance to the country's Chemical Control Order banning lead in the manufacture of paints and similar surface coatings.

Do you know how important it is to use lead-safe products? In today’s world, there’s a strong focus on quality and safety in all aspects of life. One hidden but significant health risk is the presence of lead in paint used for both domestic and industrial purposes. Lead, a heavy metal, offers beneficial properties like enhancing paint durability and brightening surfaces. However, it poses a substantial threat to human health, especially for children.

Lead can cause serious health issues, including damage to the central nervous system, anemia, kidney and bone tissue problems, and impacts on reproductive functions and fetal development in pregnant women. Its ability to accumulate in the body over time makes it particularly dangerous.

Known to humanity since the Bronze Age, lead was widely used in bronze production, as well as in household and interior items by ancient Babylonians, Egyptians, and Romans. It was popular for its unique properties: softness, low melting point, resistance to acids, though it’s a poor conductor of electricity.

Despite existing restrictions and bans, lead is still extensively used in various products, including:
Paints (not just in shipbuilding but in other industries, including the manufacture of children’s toys and playground equipment).
Scientific research has revealed that lead (Pb, atomic number 82) is a heavy metal and the final stable product of uranium (U, atomic number 92) decay. Lead compounds are extremely toxic to humans, with a permissible exposure limit of just 0.01 mg/dm³. High concentrations of lead in the body can lead to acute or chronic poisoning, known as saturnism.

Lead easily enters the body through the respiratory and digestive systems, posing a particular danger to children.

In this light, architectural, marine, automotive, traffic, textile, and industrial paints produced by a 100% Filipino-owned paint company were declared Lead Safe Paint® (BP.') following a third-party certification that verifies paints contain less than 90 parts per million (ppm) total lead, the most stringent regulatory limit for lead content in paints the world over.

"Following a thorough verification process, SCS is pleased to announce that Triton, Rosco, Primecoat, Acri-Lux, and Lotus paint brands have successfully met the strictest 90 ppm regulatory standard for lead content in paint. We congratulate Roosevelt Chemical Inc. — Triton Paints Philippines for joining a growing league of lead-safe paint makers in the country, said Rob Emelander, Program Manager, SCS Global Services, the LSP® certification body and a US-based global leader in third-party environmental and sustainability certification. "With the invaluable help and support of the International Pollutants Elimination Network (IPEN) and EcoWaste Coalition, we aim to help the Philippine paint industry move towards a lead-safe future."

Roosevelt Chemical Inc.— Triton Paints Philippines is now authorized to use the distinctive LSP® certification mark on their paint containers and promotional materials. This will provide consumers with a visual guide assuring them that such paints pose no lead-based paint hazard for their families, especially the children who are most susceptible to the adverse effects of lead exposure.
