Friday, October 04, 2019

As a lawmaker Rep. Florida "Rida" Robes has made sure that the legislation that she helps craft are timely. She addresses developing issues In the hope of coming up with sustainable solutions and benefits to the public.

Robes happens to be one of the most passionate advocates of measures that would improve the mental health programs in the country. In her privilege speech this August, Robes highlighted the need for the country's educational system to a. take into consideration the state of student's mental health.

In her privilege speech, Robes lamented that social media platforms seems to have exacerbated the depression experienced by young people. Indeed, the. technology-driven platforms expo. students to emotionally hostile encounters such as cyber bullying.

Here's the speech of Cong. Florida Robes
We have welcomed technology, woven Its trappings into the very fabric of our daily lives, it has become on integral part of our existence has brought comfort and convenience Fostered new knowledge shaped our minds and brought opportune as for a better life but MP the new and breathtaking technologies came the unwelcome darkness that lurks in evil minds that are amongst us.

Admitted, there are bitter fruits that we have unwillingly partaken among them depression, low self-esteem, exposure to inappropriate content and cyber bullying. There are other risks but these are the most pernicious of dangers we, especially our young children, find ourselves exposed to every time we go online to be wrapped in the odd solace of social media sites. At times, there is this sinking fear, that social media isn't so social and hard, reflects the dynamo end gregarious interactions in our society.

Cyberbullying has received a lot of attention in the last few years. We have seen the untold horrors that has wrecked upon us especially the young. The United  Nation's Children's Fund  (UNICEF) has reported that more than seven of every 10 percent of young people globally have been victimized by online harassment and bullying.

Stairway Foundation. Inc a child-care nonprofit organization. reported Mat 80 percent of Filipino teenagers aged 13 to 10 years using social media had been cyber bullied The same organization reported that seventy percent (70%) of Filipino children aced 7 to 12 years were also bunted online. It was a conservative columnist who once asserted Mat the words wo spout out ore bearers of consequences-- indeed. the bulled may be seen as casualties In the mindless assault of opprobrium and the hateful but graver consequences await the bully.

Indeed. what ye sow. ye shall reap And he who sows winds, reaps whirlwinds
The damage or cyber bulging does not stop even when online attacks end.  The harm caused by Doter bullying persists even through adulthood The UNICEF disclosed that victims of cyber bullying both the bullied and the bully. continue to struggle through adulthood, often with the use of drugs and alcohol.

Some experience lack of self confidence and could hardly keep themselves in school. In extreme Cases, some are unable to recover from the trauma and commit suicide.

The Philippines has seen the adverse effects of cyber bullying which is the reason we in the Philippine Congress pass laws that protect our citizens against all forms of attacks online through Repub. Act No. 10175 or the Cybercime Prevention Act of 2012 and Republic Act 10627 or the Anti Bullying Act We are committed to protect our youth against all forms of online attacks and harassment.

We are extremely grateful and proud to host an organization that has been at the forefront in the global movement against cyber bullying - Sunfull Foundation.

Since 2007, Sunfull Foundation has been conducting its own anti-cyberbully and anti-hate speech campaign, the Sunfull Internet Peace Movement. More than 7,000 Schools and organizations in Korea are participating in the Sunfull Movement. I congratulate Sunfull Foundation as it has recently joined hands wan Google Korea to work together to help improve online culture by providing education program to 100% schools nationwide
Its movement to spread positive, encouraging speech In social media has roved out to more countries and in the Philippines are extremely happy that you have started to extend the movement in our schools.

I also would like to inform Sunfull Foundation that as a fitting tribute to your dedication  and hard work for our youth, I have filed a resolution commending and congratulating you for your advocacy.

Congratulations and thank you Sunfull Foundation. Together let us promote kindness and respect. In thoughts,  in words, in deeds. Together let us help our youth. Our future leaders Thank you and a good day to an of you'.

Robes urged the Commission on Higher Education (CHEM and the Department of Education (DepEd) to be aware of the far-reaching consequences of these digital stressors.

In light of the chaotic online environment that people have to deal with, Robes — who represents the lone district of San Jose Del Monte in Bulacan — wants to cultivate positive Internet culture. "With everything goig digital, we're all spending more time interacting with others online. This is a welcome development because this means we're keeping up with the rest of the world," the congresswoman said...However. we also have to deal with the negative effects of being online. Cybebullying and other hostile or criminal acts online can be done in an instant."

Robes lamented that people, for instance, have come to expect online attacks when they share their thoughts online. She pointed out: "We know we can't please everyone, but it seerns that going online often draws out the most negative or destructive people. This can't go on. This prevents us from fully enjoying the benefits of going digital...

In line with her desire to detoxify online spaces, Robes was recently appointed  as an ambassador of the Sunfull Internet Peace Movement. The advocacy was started by the Sunfull Foundation, a non-governmental organization based in Korea whose primary purpose is to inspire people to "post messages of encouragement and condolence to those targeted by malicious online attacks and the victims of tragic world events."

The Sunfull Internet Peace Movement is also endorsed by H.E. Han Dong Man, ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Philippines.  "I am honored to be an ambassador for Internet Peace," Robes said. "I want to work even harder to come up with actionable strategies that will pave the way for more constructive and nurturing experiences online among Filipinos. We have to put stop to cyber bullying, hate speech, arid human rights violations on the Internet."
