Janine Gutierrez stars in a new film titled "Babae at Baril" directed by Rae Red for the QCinema International Film Festival 2019. After playing the role of Celestina, the fierce lady boss in the GMA afternoon prime series Dragon Lady opposite Tom Rodriguez, she is set to excite viewers again this time with Babae at Baril.
The Kapuso star is thrilled in top billing the psycho-thriller film which showcased her versatility in acting, and it challenged her to give her best because she also loved the script.
“Ito talaga yung pinangarap kong role!” she said, “Yung character na ‘to kasi, galing siya ng probinsiya, wala pang masyadong alam sa Manila, very out-of-place, pero may mangyayari sa buhay niya na sobrang magkaka-conflict yung character niya.
“And so for me, actually, parang dalawang character yung kinailangan kong i-play rito. “If anything, medyo it reminds me a bit of Attorney Grace from Legally Blind [2017 TV series] na talagang hindi magpapatalo, ipinapakita yung power ng isang babae, pero this is like a whole other level. So, wala talaga akong character na quite like this one sa Babae at Baril.
“Maganda talaga yung kuwento. The script really was what attracted me to the project, sobrang ganda ng script!"
She added that Babae at Baril, a female-fronted action movie, is one of the many projects she aspires for. “I’ve always said that I dream of playing roles like this. Direk Rae also wrote the script which is super great.”
Babae at Baril tells the story of a saleslady working at a local department store whose life takes a sudden turn when she finds a gun right at her doorstep.
As she goes through one challenge after another every day of her life, and now that she possesses a powerful weapon, she thinks she can now do whatever she wants — threaten and even hurt people who have wronged her whenever she wants.
The movie had a few subtle references to the the critically acclaimed Joaquin Phoenix starrer. But Babae at Baril has a completely different take, clarifies Direk Red.
Janine has garnered various awards for her previous performances, such as Best Supporting Actress in Urduja Heritage Film Festival for Dagsin and the German Moreno Youth Achievement Award during the 64th FAMAS Awards.
She was quoted saying in a previous interview, “We really just want to do a good job and if it’s a good story, we are game.”
"Babae at Baril" is one of the three Filipino titles that made it to QCinema's competition "Asia Next Wave," where each received P1.5 M production grant.
The film also stars Felix Roco, Elijah Canlas, JC Santos, and Sky Teotico with special participation of Ruby Ruiz, Allan Paule, and Archie Adamos.
Produced by CIGNAL ENTERTAINMENT in partnership with EPIC MEDIA.
QCinema International Film Festival 2019 will run from October 13 to 22.
