There can be only be one perfect description for Dulce whose sheer talent never ceased over time, in fact it even soared higher. Dulce is the timeless DIVA and she continuously preserved her voice through the years, surviving trends and trials.
Maynila Sa Mga Kuko Ng Liwanag The Musical is based on the Edgardo Reyes novel and inspired by National Artist for Film Lino Brocka’s classic adaptation. But the musical will be purely based on the novel.
Maynila Sa Mga Kuko Ng Liwanag The Musical is about love that will go the distance, both literally and figuratively. It is also about the loss of innocence, the fight to survive and the challenges of the characters as they go in a journey on how to survive in the heart of Manila.
It is set to touch the audience with relatable songs and the best choreographed dance routines.
Dulce has been doing other shows both here and abroad. She has also proven herself in theater when started way back in 1994, with a Best Supporting Actress award for playing Olivia in the musical Katy. Other musicals to her credit: As Grizabella in Cats, Flower Drum Song and Les Miserables as Fantine.
Right now, Dulce is part of the upcoming and most awaited "Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag Musical", and she can't help but feel overwhelmed, excited and nervous all at the same time. When she became part of the musical, she didn't know what kind of a person Mrs. Cruz is until she read the the script. Back when she was a kid, Dulce already had a vague clue of what "prostitutes" do since her mother would always remind her to be careful, "Mag ingat sa koridora". There were rumors that the girls were taken from their homes from provinces and since she worked as a singer, she would sometimes see the ladies inside a room where there's a glass window where customers can choose who they want. Koridora because most of the women are positioned at the corridors waving at customers for them to come inside the bar.
Dulce said that she really wanted to be part of Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag because she has this connection with the musical since she also have fond memories in Manila specifically in Sampaloc. It was in 1975 when she competed in Tawag ng Tanghalan.
Ducle also became emotional saying, "ang ganda ng music! Talagang ang ganda ganda, lahat maganda! Abangan nila yung song na Maynila at Asan ang hustiya." According to her, this will surely have a "tatak" with everyone and it's song that is very timely in our country.
Dulce will be playing the role of Mrs. Cruz. What kind of character is Mrs. Cruz, "Isang syang bugaw". "I'm sure this character has something to tell kasi sometimes diba napapasok ang tao sa isang gawa, trabaho, gawain o buhay na di mo naman gusto ang ginagawa mo pero the usual na you need to support your family or survive or parang yung mga OFW, so the story is really all about survival, actually sya nga ang nagpapa gaan ng mga eksena dahil mabibigat lahat ng scenes."
Dulce is all praises for the whole cast and the crew of this wonderful musical, she added that even though most of them are young, they are very professional in what they do and you really need to catch up and do your best because at some point, you have this feeling that they are also looking for inspiration in you.
Dulce said that this is one of the most challenging musical she has done because it's given that she can sing but with this one, she needs to dance and maneuver most of the time and at her age, she said it was a big challenge, good thing that their master choreographer, the one and only Douglas Nierras always assures them and support them in every way but the only thing that they need to follow is that every rehearsal should be "performance level".
Dulce also mentioned that this musical will surely touch everyone's heart specifically all the songs because it's magnificently created that as Dulce said, "Mapapatalon ka sa ganda".
Why do we all need to watch Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag? according to Dulce, "It's monumental, ibang klase ito, ibang iba."
