PCPPI reinforces commitment to workplace health and safety

Lifestyle Thursday, May 25, 2023

Safe and sound for responsible operations. The photo above shows Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc.’s (PCCPI) Cagayan de Oro Team, which was recognized as Awardees for the organization’s Galing at Sikap Plant Excellence for Safety in 2022. This recognition honors the team’s concerted efforts in adhering to stringent safety and regulatory operational standards.

Occupational health and safety is a shared responsibility. The International Labor Organization emphasizes that working in a safe environment is a right that every employer must provide. Both factors are critical in ensuring that the workplace is conducive to productivity and nurtures employee well-being.

As part of its commitment to responsible operations, Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc. (PCPPI) highlights the importance of building a workplace culture grounded on effective implementation of occupational safety and health standards. Establishing this as part of the organization’s goals prioritizes the welfare of employees across different business functions, and helps mitigate risks of common industrial and office hazards.

PCPPI president and CEO Frederick D. Ong said the company continues to observe strict compliance to industry regulations in keeping its employees, fondly called Bravehearts, safe and healthy while at work. “Having a safe workplace gives our Bravehearts confidence that they are well looked-after while performing their responsibilities across our nationwide locations. At PCPPI, we uphold policies and standards that ensure workplace safety, and implement processes to keep our employees well and productive,” said Ong.

Safety at the heart of operations

Enforcing organizational policies and safety standards is led by the Environment, Health, Safety, and Security (EHSS) teams across PCPPI’s multiple manufacturing facilities and offices The department oversees regulatory compliance measures, safety trainings and certifications, and policy development and assessment.

In 2022, all of PCPPI’s plants received the Department of Labor and Employment’s (DOLE) Safety Seal. This affirms that all of PCPPI’s manufacturing facilities comply with government-mandated public health standards, and the DOLE’s General Labor Standards and Occupational Safety and Health Standards.

Periodic assessments and reporting measures are established to regularly check the operating conditions of manufacturing equipment, as well as environmental factors that may possibly affect production. The EHSS team conducts the Annual Work Environment Measurement testing, which evaluates actual levels of illumination, ventilation, and capacity of on-site health stations vis-à-vis international standards. This process assesses how these factors encourage productivity in line with benchmarks for workplace well-being. Training series are also scheduled for all first-time visitors and third-party contractors.

Accountability and collaboration

While enforcing compliance across its nationwide locations, PCPPI also recognizes facilities that have successfully adhered to the recommended safety procedures and met workplace safety standards.

In the recently concluded National Summit of Bravehearts, the organization conferred the 2022 Galing at Sikap Plant Excellence Award in Safety to its Cagayan De Oro (CDO) plant team for demonstrating commitment to safety by maintaining an excellent record in meeting the PCPPI’s Environment, Occupational Safety, and Health standards. The CDO facility also filed and completed the necessary permits, licenses, and controls in a timely manner as part of its regulatory compliance procedures.

CDO EHSS Officers Virnie Apostol and Gideon Emanel shared how safety rests on the shoulders of all employees. “From conducting patrols and documentation to equipment assessment, we work closely with colleagues from other departments to keep our area secure. We have streamlined our communications channels to ensure visibility for possible areas of concern before they escalate,” said Apostol.

“Being recognized for our safety track record is an honor for our team in Cagayan De Oro. We consider this further motivation to further improve our processes and empower more employees to integrate safety awareness in all initiatives,” said Emanel. “This way, employees have a strong sense of accountability in keeping each other safe,” he added.

The CDO team rolls out programs to reinforce occupational safety procedures based on international standards, including practicing Hazard Identifications, Risk Assessment, and Controls (HIRAC), immediate reporting of near-miss incidents to immediately address potential risks, and conducting mandatory trainings and safety orientations for all employees. The organization continues to be guided by its ICARE (Integrity and Innovation, Care and Respect, Empowerment and Excellence) Values in fulfilling its responsibilities towards its employees and the local community.

PCPPI is the exclusive manufacturer and distributor of well-loved international beverage brands in the country. These include Pepsi-Cola, Mountain Dew, 7-Up, Mirinda, Mug, Gatorade, Tropicana, Lipton Ice Tea, Milkis, Chum Churum Soonhari, and Premier Purified Water. Pepsi Philippinessees sustainability efforts as effective business strategy

Lifestyle Friday, August 09, 2019

Amid the environmental challenges the country is facing, local bottling firm Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines Inc. (PCPPI) has strengthened its commitment to running a sustainable business through internal solid waste management efforts. Throughout its 70 years of serving Filipinos world-class refreshments, PCPPI has acknowledged the importance of these measures not just in perpetuating the business but also in ensuring its generational service to the country.

“We strengthened our core commitment to sustainability as we acknowledged that the natural resources we have are limited. Our business and surrounding communities depend on these resources so we resolved to make sure they will continue to be available now and in the future though internal programs we’ve set for ourselves,” said PCPPI Senior Vice President for Operations Allan Frias II.

One of the measures PCPPI initiated within its business was driving a circular economy—minimizing waste at its source through its internal 5-year LuntiangYaman program focusing on environmental conservation and development. Under this program they launched a three-pronged approach to solid waste management: Packaging innovations, Recycling, and Partnerships.

Innovative packaging solutions

PCPPI has ensured the recyclability of its entire product portfolio—with the bigger share comprised of Returnable Glass Bottles (RGB) at 71%, and the rest comprised of 20% special packaging of pre-mixed beverages for soda fountains, 8% high-value recyclable PET and 1% aluminum can.

"Our product portfolio historically has always been hinged on the returnable glass bottle (RGB) as there continues to be a demand among consumers, and RGBs are a lot sturdier than plastic bottles,” Frias said. “We focus on RGBs because very little needs to be done for their re-use. Our partners return our glass bottles for a fee and all we need to do then is wash and sanitize them.”

Through years of developing RGBs, PCPPI has optimized packaging by reducing the materials in other containers apart from glass bottles by making them lighter, successfully diverting tons of solid waste from landfills. As a result of their packaging innovations since 2014, PCPPI has collectively reduced plastic resin used in its PET containers by 863.4 MT, glass material by 6,467.5 MT, and carton material usage by 921.35 MT.

“Lighter packaging in no way compromises the durability of these containers. The same quality of our products is retained but with added benefit of lessening waste being generated,” Frias explained.

Effective recycling efforts

The Filipino bottling firm also tightened its enforcement of recycling within all of its 13 plants across the Philippines. According to Frias, since the implementation of their LuntiangYaman program, PCPPI has successfully recycled 81% of in-plant solid waste, putting them right on track to reach their 85% goal by 2020.

“PCPPI embeds recycling even in our community volunteerism projects,” Frias said. “In the past we transformed PET bottles into sustainable sources for light in war-stricken Marawi and recently, in our BrigadaEskwela efforts this year where we turned over a greenhouse made of upcycled PET bottles to one of our beneficiaries.”

Strong Industry partnerships

As sustainability isn’t a competition for PCPPI, the company also leveraged on their industry partnerships to help address solid waste challenges outside their plants.

The company has been a long-time partner of the Philippine Alliance for Recycling and Materials Sustainability (PARMS) alongside other industry movers among Fast-Moving Consumer Group enterprises . "We do not have control over post-consumer wastes, but we try to address this by engaging with our brothers in the industry to help the community have a common recycling facility for all of their wastes,” Frias said. "Here, we segregate our wastes, as well as our partners’ for recycling.”

Further, PCPPI has recently partnered with ABS-CBN LingkodKapamilya to donate its used industrial oils, and car in exchange of proceeds that will be remitted to the ABS-CBN foundation to help fund its projects. The project will not just help divert and properly dispose these harmful leftovers, but aims to help alleviate as well the lives of the beneficiaries.

“When it comes to strengthening business continuity, sustainability must always be a key component. By being more conscious of our responsibility to the environment, we benefit not only our business but the communities that surround and support us well into the years to come,” Frias concluded.

Jun Manuel, PCPPI Vice President for Legal, Government, and Corporate Affairs; Monique Castro, Senior Manager for Corporate Affairs and Communications; and Gutzee Segura, PepsiCo Marketing Manager with this year’s TeenSpeak champion, Team TeenSiPeak holding their grand prize check; and UP AdCore’sTeenSpeak Project Lead, Bianca Aquino)

After weeks of grueling competition, Team TeenSIPeak composed of 5 Business Administration students from University of the Philippines-Diliman emerged as the champion of this year’s TeenSpeak finals.

TeenSpeak, the annual inter-university idea generation competition is spearheaded by the University of the Philippines’ Advertising Core (UP AdCore) student organization. This year, it partnered with Filipino bottling firm Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines Inc. (PCPPI) in running its 10th year derby.

“Engaging with young minds is very important for us in PCPPI,” said Samudra Bhattacharya, PCPPI President. “What the youth does today tells us where we will go tomorrow. Their unbiased and undiluted thoughts on how we can innovate our business is the best part of working with them.”

Titled “Start with a Sip”—a play on Isip, the Filipino word for think—the competition challenged the students’ strategic skills in coming up withcreative plans to relaunch Pepsi as a multifaceted Filipino brand.

“By partnering with Pepsi, the competition empowered college students to think out of the box, to strive for growth, and to inspire one another to craft ideas that could change the world,” said Bianca Aquino, Project Lead for TeenSpeak.

“In the 24 years I’ve been working, the level of change in the market and society has been enormous. The entire shaping of the world all happened through two generations of mankind and it is the youth who influenced the way the world thinks now,” said Bhattacharya. “This ultimately says collaborating with the younger generation pushes everything forward. The companies of the future, products, consumption trends are all determined by the youth.”

TeenSipeak was one of the top seven teams that stood out from hundreds of participants from all over the country competing to develop their best branding and marketing ideas through boot camps and mentorship sessions with PCPPI and PepsiCo executives. Advancing to the immersion leg of the contest along with other finalists, TeenSipeakwas given exclusive access to PCPPI’s Muntinlupa facilities and an exclusive session with no less than the President of PCPPI, Mr. Bhattacharya.

Addressing the participants of TeenSpeak, Bhattacharya emphasized the power of young minds, ingenuity, and inherent passion.

“My personal mantra that I want to impart to you is do everything to the best of your abilities, in whatever you do. You may have different levels of capabilities, but each of us can do our best and derive meaning, not to mention happiness and satisfaction, in whatever we do our best in,” concluded Bhattacharya.
